Woods & Finishes

We value the unique properties of every piece of lumber and veneer. We hand-select them for the grain patterns which determine their ultimate placement within the furniture. Fine woods, properly finished, catch and refract light, creating an elusive sense of movement in the surface. It's a sensation which can't be fully described with words.

The finest of woods, superior design and meticulous workmanship deserve a proper finish. Our finishing is done by hand, using modern materials. The result is a deep lustrous patina which is durable without appearing to be dipped in plastic. Our pieces are frequently mistaken for antiques.

When hardware to complement our design does not exist, we refuse to compromise with second best. We make it ourselves. We do not hesitate to invest in a single hinge what run-of-the-mill manufacturers spend on an entire piece of furniture.

A note about custom finishes: For a minimal upcharge we are happy to create custom finishes. We request that you supply "a finish to match". Once we've received your deposit we will reproduce your finish and present it for your approval.

Crotch Mahogany Crotch Mahogany

This fiery grain comes from the fork or "crotch" of the mahogany tree. We use this rare and costly material throughout many of our pieces.

Mahogany Mahogany

The premier cabinet wood since entering the European and American trade in the early 18th Century. No other material matches the strength and beauty of true mahogany. We carefully select the mahogany we use for superior grain and color. Native to the Carribean and South America.

Walnut Burl Walnut Burl

A burl is an aberration in a tree caused by disease or pruning which makes the grain grow in waves and spirals rather than straight. The result can be strikingly beautiful. No two are alike. Our primary source of supply is the hedgerow country of France.

Black Walnut Black Walnut

A dense, silky textured wood with warm grain figures. Prized for fine furniture for at least a thousand years. Native to North America and Europe.

Please understand our photographer's studio uses much brighter lights than typically found in residential settings. The reason for the close-ups is to share with you the integrity and esthetic standards of our fine veneer faces. When exact finish tones are necessary, please contact one of our fine showroom representatives for assistance. Contact representative showrooms or the manufacturing shop for wood finish samples.
